The inaugural event was a success – this was the unanimous verdict on the first Hamburg Cruise Days of summer 2008, when more than 600,000 excited spectators from around the world witnessed the Elbe's transformation into a glittering open-air stage. Every two years since then, the docklands have become a maritime playground for the leisurely exploration of various theme islands: shopping, fashion and design, sport and relaxation, children's activities, markets, music, entertainment and food prepared by the city's best chefs. Another mesmerising highlight is Blue Port by acclaimed lighting designer Michael Batz, who swathes the area from HafenCity to Neumühlen in the colour of the sky, of the sea and of longing.
